From Class to Pint: The Making of Bonfire Ale

Wed, Aug 31, 2016

Calling all students... THIS is a class you need to sign up for!

Imagine a marketing class... on beer. Too good to be true? It actually exists at SAIT!  It's an amazing hands-on learning opportunity and Big Rock has been proud to be a part of it for the 4th year in a row.

The strategic marketing class, lead by SAIT instructors David Gaudet and Sheila Ross, tasks students with a semester-long project to launch a beer, including every last detail related to the production and marketing of a brew. Students work with their instructors and marketing leaders from Big Rock Brewery throughout the semester. The final challenge is to present their projects to a panel of Big Rock judges (including Brewmaster Paul Gautreau) who then selects the best of the best to come brew the actual beer at Big Rock .

This year, 12 teams competed for the coveted prize, dubbed The Wort Award (FYI for you non-beer geeks: Wort is the liquid extracted from the mashing process during the brewing process. It contains sugars that are fermented and turned into alcohol.)

On September 7th, the winning team of Jennnifer Aquino, Nessa Ryan, Samar Hertil, Andrew Cubillos, Sara Mejia, Ria Sarkar, Travis Collins and Kade Hafner will launch their Bonfire Maple Ale at The Gateway. This dynamic team went above and beyond in their quest for The Word Award, creating a beer that was custom made for students as they return from their summer adventures. "Start the semester with a fire in your belly"... the tagline for their beer that is reminiscent of shared moments in front of a bonfire.

Cheers to all the students who wowed our Big Rock panel with their innovative marketing ideas and tasty beer dreams. You made picking a winning team a nearly impossible task.

We hope to see you on September 7th at The Gateway for the official launch of Bonfire Maple Ale.

Good luck to you in your future marketing careers... you're off to a great start.
