Operations Manager

Location: Vancouver, BC

Description

Reporting to the Vice President Operations, the Operations Manager is responsible for managing the production of beer and other beverages at the Big Rock Vancouver brewery with emphasis on industry-leading craft beer quality and safety priorities. The scope of this role includes the management and oversight of all operations and personnel within the Vancouver brewery, including but not limited to: Brewing, Cellar Operations, Filtration, Packaging, Quality Control, Inventory Management, Logistics/Warehouse, Maintenance and Engineering. The Vancouver Brewery Operations Manager works closely with multiple Calgary based corporate functions including but not limited to Accounting, Finance, Sales and Human Resources.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Uphold the exacting quality of our existing world class beers.
  • Oversee and direct the day-to-day operations of brewery operations, maintaining on-going communication within including but not limited to: VP Operations, Director Brewing Ops, Production Operations Manager, and the BC General Manager while ensuring product quality and employee safety.
  • Responsible for the financial performance of the brewing and production plant operations.
  • Responsible for the quality, specifications and procurement of all materials required for the production/brewing, packaging, storing, shipping, and distributing of our products.
  • Accountable for operation and staffing of canning/kegging equipment.
  • Responsible for workplace safety ensuring compliance, implementation and ongoing adherence with the Corporate Safety program and oversee the execution of a brewery Safety Program.
  • Responsible for planning to ensure there are no stock outs or shortages to the customer.
  • Accountable for Inventory Management.
  • Provide leadership and motivation through direction provided and personal actions by demonstrating Big Rock Values and attributes reflecting our corporate culture.
  • Represent and promote Big Rock at industry functions and events by developing and delivering.
  • Continuously seek and identify opportunities for process and / or efficiency improvements in daily operations, safety, and beer quality.
  • Develop and implement best brewing practices with the goal of making great consistent product efficiently.
  • Promote a culture where employee and food safety are always top priorities.
  • Hire, lead and develop operations team roles.
  • Oversee and ensure the development of Standard Operating Procedures throughout brewery operations.
  • Work collaboratively and in consultation with cross functional corporate teams (Sales, Marketing, Logistics, Maintenance, QA, Finance, HR, IT etc.), peer group and internal subject matter experts.
  • Ensure compliance and enforcement of brewery policies and procedures.
  • Stay abreast of key and relevant advances in brewing technology and practices.
  • As a member of the brewery management team and key holder this role will be identified on the emergency response call list.
  • On call and available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
  • Undertakes special projects and research where requested.
  • Performs other duties or projects as required and assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years brewing experience.
  • Post secondary education in Microbiology, Chemistry, or Food Science or College Diploma in a Technical Discipline or a Brewing Program preferred (Brewing background / credentials or Equivalent combinations of education and experience that result in the required level of knowledge skill and competence will be considered).
  • A certification as a 5th Class Power Engineer (or higher) (in progress at minimum).
  • General mechanical aptitude, good troubleshooting, and quick learning skills.
  • Knowledge of CIP practices and cleaning chemicals, and WHMIS.
  • Good math and computer skills with working knowledge of MS Office Suite.
  • Must be physically fit to be able to spend long hours standing and perform occasional medium to heavy lifting (e.g., specialty malt or hops up to 30 kgs).
  • Ability to perform duties to a high level of standard under minimal direct supervision.
  • Candidates will need to satisfactorily complete a brewing knowledge assessment.
  • Qualification in related professional organizations such as Master Brewers Association of Americas (MBAA), American Society of Brewing Chemists (ASBC) and Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD) with a minimum designation of Diploma in Brewing.
  • Experience in recipe formulation for multiple beer styles.
  • A demonstrated passion for developing and producing world-class craft beer.
  • Demonstrate computer proficiency in Office programs including, Excel, Word, and Power Point.
  • A genuine commitment to Quality Assurance and inspiring others to build quality into the product.
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and communication fostering performance excellence.
  • Exceptional organizational skills - ability to manage deadlines and priorities.
  • Detail-oriented, multi-tasker.
  • Sense of urgency and ability to prioritize, and get things done in a rapidly changing and dynamic environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to speak effectively and comfortably to large groups.
  • Able to multitask and thrive in a fast paced, multi-faceted operation.
