Packaging Supervisor

Location: Calgary, AB


Reporting to the Production Operations Manager the Packaging Supervisor is responsible for the overall functionality of the packaging team, including canning, bottling, variety pack and kegging lines. The Packaging Supervisor is responsible for the leadership and administration of packaging operations. He or she will manage the packaging staff and provide input to assessment of employee performance, and the effective monitoring of employee and facility adherence to all company policies, processes, and practices. Ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements other duties and responsibilities may be assigned as required. The schedule for this role requires typical Monday to Friday hours, with periodic availability outside of these hours as required.


  • Manage the packaging operations by directing and coordinating staff in the achievement of production objectives according to process and quality specifications.
  • Oversee day to day work of packaging employees.
  • Develop and implement more formalized training requirements to ensure all packaging employees are crossed trained on all equipment and tasks.
  • Execute and complete required records and documentation on defined training requirements per the training matrix to maintain a flexible team with capability to operate all equipment effectively at all times.
  • Assist Lead Hand (s), and as needed function in a Lead Hand capacity on the floor. (e.g., Vacation relief).
  • Communicate and ensure compliance and adherence to organization’s Safety, Quality, GMP’s, Food Safety, and all other company policies and procedures, as well as applicable safety standards and laws.
  • Ensure completion and compliance with all HR employee processes, procedures & documents (including but not limited to: performance documents, communication requirements).
  • Enforce policies regarding security and safety in order to maintain a safe working environment and ensure facility housekeeping and sanitation standards are met.
  • Oversee start up and shut down procedures on all equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and take corrective measure in the event of equipment or material problems.
  • Work to identify issues and work with departments to resolve.
  • Develop Change Over procedure with centerlines.
  • Control the safe handling and disposal of product effluent.
  • Develop and sustain a professional and productive relationship with all, applicable internal and external customers, resources and stakeholders.
  • Ensure consistent and daily communication with other departments regarding quality, packaging, product availability, scheduling and other needs.
  • Improve packaging efficiency and shrinkage.
  • Identify and inform appropriate resources/departments of any significant repairs and maintenance required on packaging equipment Participate in developing, testing validating and maintaining standard operating procedures and documentation and policies in accordance Good Manufacturing Practices, WHIMS and Food Safety Policies and implement 5S + safety.
  • Assist with control and reporting of packaging inventory throughout the Packaging Department.
  • Review, validate and reconcile all daily production reports including, sanitizing and caustic reports.
  • Ensure execution of packaging production according to production schedule as defined by the Demand Planning function.
  • Actively operate to positively achieve KPIs and objectives of department budget through utilization of packaging materials and supplies, manpower, utilities, and contracted services.
  • Act as a change champion, leading and influencing positive adoption of new processes and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Minimum of 7 years of direct work experience in packaging supervising others.
  • 5 years related Packaging Line experience, including supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of the care, cleaning, and maintenance of all mechanical packaging equipment.
  • Understanding of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Food Safety standards.
  • Direct working knowledge experience in packaged goods, food & beverage, or a related industry.
  • Direct working experience with operations, packaging, inventory control, and transportation management.
  • Demonstrated leadership and change management skills, Lean Manufacturing a plus.
  • Solid financial aptitude and experience managing a budget.
  • Flexibility and availability to work rotating shifts, overtime and weekends.
  • Lean Six Sigma trained is preferred (Green Belt or equivalent preferred).
  • Able to facilitate data-driven statistical approaches to problem solving.
  • Successful completion of or in process pursuit of an MBAA Packaging course or equivalent, additional equipment training classes.
  • A certification of 5th Class Power Engineer or higher is an asset.
  • Post-secondary training/education in a Trade Program is an asset.
  • Equivalent combination of comparable education and experience will be considered.
  • Strong presentation, oratory, and verbal skills.
  • Proficiency with English Language.
  • Must be highly motivated, possess excellent communication skills and able to lead by example.
  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including conflict resolution, and people management skills.
  • Sound leadership, staff management, and teambuilding skills.
  • Ability to adapt to and learn fast new software.
  • Able to work well under pressure and meet set deadlines.
  • High degree of resourcefulness, flexibility, and adaptability.
  • Ability to listen and provide feedback constructively.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Excellent Organizational, and communication skills that are demonstrated by example and fosters excellence.
  • Proficient leadership skills that support the corporate culture and build successful teams.
  • Demonstrate computer proficiency in Office programs including, Excel, Word, and Power Point.
  • Able to multitask and thrive in a fast paced, multi-faceted operation.
  • Energetic, self-motivated, and results-oriented.
  • Safety equipment will be required, e.g., steel-toed safety boots, safety glasses/goggles, etc.
  • Exposed to heat and cold temperatures.
  • Possible exposure to dangerous/hazardous materials.
  • Ability to lift at least 40 kg’s.
  • Available for emergency calls after work hours.
  • Overtime as required.
  • Must follow all work instructions, Good Manufacturing Practices, Food Safety Procedures, Illness and Disease Policy and all other company policies and procedures.
  • This is a safety sensitive position.
